The first Doctor Strange movie helmed by Scott Derrickson was well-received with an 89 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes with a 7.29 average score, raking in USD677.7million (SGD925 million) globally.
Seeing that it was so popular with Benedict Cumberbatch also appearing in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, a sequel is definitely in the works.
News about Scott Derrickson being brought back to direct Doctor Strange 2 was announced last December.
Other than that, during the epic Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, it was revealed that the sequel is called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) will be playing a supporting character in it.
Additionally, it’s been reported (via Cinema Blend) that the film will be Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first horror outing.
“When I came and talked to [Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige] about doing a sequel, I said, ‘I don’t want to do just another sequel. If I’m going to do it, it needs to go into the territory that drew me into the Doctor Strange comics in the first place’ – which is how they dipped into the gothic and the horror and the horrific. And we’re going to make the first scary MCU movie.”
Scott Derrickson has experience directing horror films like Exorcism of Emily Rose, Deliver Us From Evil and Sinister.
Kevin Feige said that the film will be connected directly to another MCU property: The Disney+series WandaVision.
Doctor Strange 2 is set to hit the big screens on May 6 2021.
Among the other MCU movies slated to be released are Black Widow, The Falcon and Winter Soldier, The Eternals movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Loki Disney Plus series, What If…?, Hawkeye, and Thor 4: Love and Thunder.
