India, Aug– Some people looking to add a furry friend to their family are adopting fancy and foreign dog breeds.

But there are many out there who are very clear about adopting either Indian breed or strays.

With the population of street dogs becoming a concern, animal lovers are advocating the adoption of street dogs. And, a lot of pet lovers are leading from the front regarding this issue. This International Dog Day we take a look at the trend closely.

“As a dog lover and one who cares for their well-being, I urge people to adopt street dogs! Adoption is not only about keeping a pet inside home but one can do that by helping and taking care of territorial dogs.

“With a little effort like sterilisation of female dogs we can control population and then provide them with food and shelter if you can. They don’t need much,” says Rakhi Kishore, an anchor-RJ and activist who runs Jeev Basera, which is provides medical treatment to dogs.

She adds, “I have seen people adopting fancy and exotic breeds of pups for status and social media but once their interest is lost, they just abandon them. So, I advocate adopting street dogs in your close localities and just care for them a little with food etc.” Along with her three pets including a stray she also feeds plenty of dogs in her locality.

19-year-old make-up artist and singer Shane Paul adopted street dog Mayu three years back. “I was drawn towards pet since long but I was very sure that I will adopt an Indie dog. Someone posted a picture photo on social media and I adopted my first dog.

“I am very happy that I went for a local breed and as somewhere I had read that street dogs are more caring towards their owners. She is my stress buster and my best friend,” says the youngster who is also inspiring others to adopt Indie breed dogs.

A teacher and activist Caroline Borges shares, “With my husband I feed around 300 dogs daily from our own sources. We don’t take money as donations either. I model and do photo shoots but don’t charge a penny instead I prefer to take dog food as my remuneration. In shoots too street dogs are my subject. I teach my students to be empathetic towards them as they too need a little support.”

Recently she took students to a dog shelter home. “I took some students of St Francis College to Nawabi Trail, a small mini creche which provides medical care to street dogs. I even take students to Jeeva Basera to educate them on Indie breeds and inspire them to adopt ,” she adds.
