Manila, Aug. 30 — STOCKHOLD, Sweden – Swedish maritime authorities said a large rescue operation was under way off the Swedish coast on Monday when a car ferry with 300 people on board was on fire, Swedish maritime authorities said.

“There is a fire on the car deck,” Swedish Maritime Administration spokesman Jonas Franzen told AFP, adding that three helicopters and seven vessels had been dispatched to the scene and an evacuation of the ship had begun.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, and the fire’s cause was not yet known.

“The fire is under control,” another spokeswoman, Lisa Mjorning, told AFP.

The fire that broke out on the car ferry off Sweden’s coast on Monday has been extinguished and the ship will be towed to port, Swedish maritime authorities said yesterday.

The blaze appeared to have started on a refrigeration lorry on the car deck of the Stena Scandica, which was sailing from Sweden to Latvia.

“The fire is out,” Swedish Maritime Administration spokeswoman Lisa Mjorning told AFP.

“The ferry will be towed to port in the next three to four hours,” she said, adding that it would be towed to Nynashamn, south of Stockholm.
