The pace of the “Avatar” sequel is almost identical to that of the first film, despite the otherwise unimpressive holiday corridor: The fourth weekend of the 2009 film “Avatar” had a $50.3 million haul.
Without accounting for inflation, the sequel has risen to become the seventh-highest grossing movie of all time, a sum that is mostly attributable to its successful international run. The movie has sold more tickets abroad ($1.2 billion) than any other movie since the pandemic began.
According to Australian entertainment portal News.com.au, the sequel is the seventh highest-grossing film of all time, beating Jurassic World.
Last week, The Way of Water became the top cinema earner of 2022 when it surpassed Top Gun: Maverick and its $1.44 billion haul.

The Cameron blockbuster now has only six films ahead of it — Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.91 billion), Avengers: Infinity War ($2.04 billion), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.06 billion), Titanic ($2.20 billion), Avengers: Endgame ($2.79 billion) and Avatar ($2.92 billion).
Both Avatar and Titanic were also directed by Cameron.
