Ex-PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad claims Muhyiddin Yassin was betrayed by Umno despite eh latter ‘aiding’ fallen Prime Minister Najib Razak in his political comeback.

Muhyddin may believe that he lost his position as Prime Minister because he opposed Najib and Umno leader Ahmad Zahid Hamidi while in power, but the reality remains that the two got more powerful during his brief rule.

Muhyiddin lasted for 17 months as PM (March 2020-August 2021) before resigning after losing parliamentary support, marking him Malaysia’s shortest-serving prime minister.

He was appointed Prime Minister when Mahathir resigned in February 2020. Mahathir quit after stating he had lost the majority because his party, Bersatu, wanted to work with kleptocrats from Umno, including Najib Razak and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Muhyiddin may not have been PM without the assistance of Najib and Zahid, according to Mahathir, yet Muhyiddin appears to dismiss this reality.

Muhyiddin had previously stated that leaders like Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and BN advisory Najib Abdul Razak wanted their fraud charges dismissed. Muhyiddin refused to listen to them.

He did not, however, resign because he refused to obey Najib or Zahid’s demands. Mahathir says Muhyiddin had no choice but to vacate the PM seat.

According to Mahathir, Muhyiddin simply lost the majority in Parliament because both Najib and Zahid chose to reject him as PM and wanted an Umno PM to replace him.

The 96 year old Mahathir is refreshing Muhyiddin’s memory, reminding him that last year, Najib and Zahid were among dozens of Umno MPs that refused to work with Muhyiddin as prime minister.

In an open letter, Mahathir claims that the current crisis would not have occurred if Muhyiddin hadn’t initially pulled down the Pakatan Harapan federal government.

Muhyiddin, who became the Bersatu leader after Mahathir quit as PM, took over the government with the help of Umno and frogs from the Keadilan party of Anwar Ibrahim.

The robber

“We, including Johor voters, managed to stop Najib from robbing the people when he, Umno, and BN were rejected in the last general election,” Mahathir says.

“The (electoral) success reflected how many Johoreans could not accept Umno supporting a robber.

“Unfortunately, the success was stunted after Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, in wanting to become prime minister, betrayed the people’s mandate and Harapan partners for his ambitions.

“During the Sheraton Move, I asked if he was willing to set aside his principles to cooperate with Umno’s kleptocrats and court cluster. Muhyiddin said principles were not important, politics is,” Mahathir adds.

Najib has been found guilty of money laundering, power abuse, and criminal breach of trust. He is appealing his 12-year prison term and RM210 million punishment for stealing cash from a former 1MDB business.
