Politician George Santos, the son of Brazilian immigrants from New York, admitted to lying on his resume about his education and work experience and is now in troubled waters.
Santos, a history-making political neophyte who will be representing a fraction of Long Island in the House of Representatives, disclosed it during an interview with the New York Times, however, he asserted that the fabrications would not stop him from serving his full two-year term as a congressman.
In an exclusive interview with the post, he maintained that he is not a criminal. “This [controversy] will not deter me from having good legislative success. I will be effective. I will be good.”
Politician lies
Just a few weeks before his oath of office, the politician had his resume and religious association been critically examined. In his campaign biography, he claimed that his grandparents were born in Ukraine and escaped the Holocaust by bolting to Belgium before escaping again to Brazil, which led to many people questioning whether he was in fact Jewish as claimed.
The Washington Post reported that assertions of Santos about being employed in the financial industry and working for Goldman Sachs and Citigroup could not be confirmed.
Instead, Santos said, he worked for Link Bridge, which did business with both Citigroup and Goldman Sachs.
Santos also admitted to the New York Times that he never graduated from college, after saying that he obtained a degree in 2010 from Baruch.
“I didn’t graduate from any institution of higher learning. I’m embarrassed and sorry for having embellished my resume,” he told the Post. “I own up to that…We do stupid things in life.”
The politician said he is Catholic, though his grandmother told him stories about being Jewish and converting to Catholicism, he claimed.
He was accused of committing another falsehood when he said that he is gay and is open about it. Those who questioned him said that he could not be since he was married to a woman until 2020. Santos responded to those claims by saying that while he was married to a woman, it was only for five years, and is currently married to a gay man.
An audacious liar?
In a statement through his attorney, Joseph Murray, Santos boldly said — “George Santos represents the kind of progress that the Left is so threatened by – a gay, Latino, first-generation American and Republican who won a Biden district in overwhelming fashion by showing everyday voters that there is a better option than the broken promises and failed policies of the Democratic Party.
“After four years in the public eye, and on the verge of being sworn in as a member of the Republican-led 118th Congress, the New York Times launches this shotgun blast of attacks.”
