Manila, Oct. 7 — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) strongly condemned the shooting of a group of civilians who were harvesting their farm products in Barangay Igasan, Patikul, Sulu on October 5 by suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).
The attack resulted in the death of Tali Lakibul, a member of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team.
“We denounce the terrorist act and the alleged retaliation of the local terrorist group against the residents of Patikul due to their declaration of the ASG as persona non grata,” CHR Spokesperson Atty Jacqueline Ann de Guia said in a statement.
The CHR extended its deepest condolences to the family of Tali and said that its concerned Regional Office will be conducting an independent probe regarding the attack.
“The Commission also reiterates the need to protect civilians at all times in accordance with international humanitarian law,” said de Guia.
“Similarly, we support civilian-led and multi-sectoral efforts to attain peace in their respective communities, such as the signing of the People’s Peace Covenant in various towns in Sulu this year.
