No prizes for guessing that the highest-grossing movie franchise of all time is the Marvel Cinematic Universe followed by Star Wars both of which fall under the Disney umbrella.

Here are some of the highest-earning franchises to grace the screens:

1.Marvel Cinematic Universe

MCU is unquestionably the king of lucrative movie franchises. Based on the Marvel comic books and superheroes, the MCU is the highest-grossing film franchise in history. The 23 MCU movies have earned $22.5 billion worldwide and the franchise has grossed over $10 billion worldwide.

This is mostly due to the Avengers movies which have earned $7.7 billion over four films.

2.Star Wars

Disney property Star Wars is the second most highest grossing franchise in the world by box office revenue. In total all 12 movies grossed $10.32 billion.

The highest grossing Star Wars film by nominal revenue, 2017’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens made slightly more than $2 billion worldwide.

In 2012, Disney acquired LucasFilm which owned the the rights to the Star Wars franchise for $4 billion. Factoring in merchandise and licensing sales, the investment paid off big time.

3.Harry Potter

At number 3 is the Harry Potter series which includes the original eight Harry Potter movies as well as the spin-off series, Fantastic Beasts.

Based on J.K Rowling’s books the franchise gained steam steadily. In total the franchise made $9.2 billion.

4.Spider-Man

The fourth highest grossing franchise is Spider Man. The Spider-Man films have grossed $7.2 billion worldwide. Of these its most recent instalment Spider-Man: Far From Home is the highest earner with more than $1 billion at the box office.

Based on the novels by Ian Fleming, the James Bond movie franchise is the fifth highest in terms of revenue. Although the first James Bond film only grossed $59 million in 1962, the latest one Spectre grossed nearly a billion dollars. In total the franchise has made $7.1 billion in total with over 24 movies. Of these, the highest earning film was Skyfall in 2012 with $1.1 billion globally.
