Jay Chou donates NT$140 million to charity

Taiwanese pop star , 41 has contributed all funds from his inaugural live stream on Chinese app to charity. Taiwanese outlet Newtalk reported that the singer contributed NT$140 million that was raised during his 31-minute live stream on July 26.

“According to official figures, Chou’s live stream saw 68 million views. Other also donated to Chou namely Hong Kong’s Wong Cho-lam, donated 200,000 yuan,” the outlet reported.

Singapore outlet TODAY reported that the top contributor donated seven million yuan, while those in second and third place gave five million yuan and three million yuan respectively.

Aside from Chou, Chinese pianist Lang Lang gave 400,000 yuan, while Chinese host Haman Hu gave 350,000 yuan. Jay Chou joined Kuaishou last month and is a rival of Douyin. In Chou’s first post, he shared that if he reaches 10 million followers, he will perform magic tricks on a live broadcast.

“That turned out to be a modest request ‘cos the number of his followers ended up exceeding 23.1 million, and so he went ahead with the stream as promised,” the daily reported.

Born January 18, 1979, Jay Chou is a Taiwanese singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer, film producer, actor, magician, president of fashion brand-PHANTACi and director. Named the ‘King of Mandopop’, he is one of the most successful and influential Asian artistes for his achievements in the Chinese language scene. Chou has sold more than 30 million albums. He is one of the best-selling artists in Mainland and he collaborates with lyricist Vincent Fang.

Chou launched his debut studio album Jay in 2000 under the record company Alfa Music. The following year he released his second studio album Fantasy. Fantasy combined Western and Eastern music styles. The album garnered five Golden Melody Awards including Album of the Year. Chou has since released 12 more studio albums, gaining significant prominence in Asian communities around the . Chou has embarked on six tours, performing in cities around the to more than 10 million people as of 2019.

Chou acted in Initial D as well as Curse of the Golden Flower. He has since starred in a number of films, becoming known to Western audiences when he made his Hollywood debut in 2011 with The Green Hornet, starring alongside Seth Rogen and Christoph Waltz. Chou also manages his own record and management company, JVR Music. In 2016, he made an appearance in the Hollywood film Now You See Me 2.
