Kung Fu Panda first came out in 2008 and became a super hit. The franchise then released two more films with the most recent one in 2016.

Po the Panda has since defeated a trio of animated villains. At the end of the third movie, Po is named Master Oogway’s successor and teaches all the pandas in the Valley of Peace kung fu and chi.

The cast for the film is still uncertain but speculation is that some of the original cast could be returning namely Joe Black as Po, Bryan Cranston as Li Shan, James Hong as Mr Ping, Jackie Chan as Master Monkey, Seth Rosen as Master Mantis, David Cross as Master Crane, Lucy Liu as Master Viper and Dustin Hoffman as Master Shifu.

In 2010, DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg announced that there may be up to six Kung Fu Panda movies. However later in 2016, after the third one, the film’s co-director said they were taking it “one at a time”

Each film has soared at the box office, combined it has grossed $1.8 billion worldwide. It is the tenth most successful franchise in movie history.

The strange name is derived from the titular character of the show Po Ping, a giant panda who was chosen as the prophesied Dragon Warrior and becomes a master of kung fu. The franchise is set in a fantasy wuxia genre version of ancient China populated by anthropomorphic animals.  Although his caliber is in doubt at first, he proves himself worthy of his title and fulfills his destiny in the end.
