China — A man who once vowed “in sickness and in health; till death do us part” lived up to his promise and reinstated his marriage with his ex-wife after finding out she had end-stage kidney disease.
The couple got divorced in 2019.
Chen Zhenfeng from Suiyang District in Shangqiu, Henan Province met his wife, Xie Hongxia, when he was 30 years old, and she was 26.
They had a whirlwind romance and tied the knot a few months later.
Their marriage then experienced challenges, such as Mdm Hongxia going through two miscarriages.
The strain was too much on their relationship, resulting in fights breaking out over small matters, which ended in the divorce.
Mr Zhenfeng, a Chinese veteran, is now 39 years old and recently checked up on his ex-wife.
He then discovered she was suffering from end-stage kidney disease, reported 8world News on Saturday (Nov 27).
Seeing Mdm Hongxia’s haggard face when he visited her at the hospital, broke Mr Zhenfeng’s heart.
He discovered she did not remarry due to her physical condition, giving him the idea to remarry her.
Mdm Hongxia initially refused the proposal, adding that her health was deteriorating and would lead to high medical bills.
However, Mr Zhenfeng was firm on his decision, noting that he could not ignore the responsibility of taking care of one’s partner, especially during her time of need.
In an interview with D视频, Mr Zhenfeng promised to care for his wife for the rest of her life.
He walks alongside Mdm Hongxia as her eyesight has been affected due to her condition.
“Even if you can’t see anymore, I can be your eyes. Don’t cry, I’m willing to give up one of my kidneys even if it means I may live a few years less, if it means you can live longer,” said Mr Zhenfeng.
