Golden Globes

Michelle Yeoh took home the Golden Globes award for best actress, a first for a Malaysian actress, but then ordered the exit music to stop playing after it interrupted her speech.

“Shut up, please. I can beat you up, OK? And I’m serious,” Yeoh laughed.

But this ‘shut up’ has a profound meaning for Asian women in particular, says author Catherine Ceniza Choy.

The orchestra started to perform as she was giving her speech and that made Yeoh react at the Golden Globes.

Yeoh won best actress in a motion picture, musical or comedy for playing the many iterations of laundromat owner Evelyn Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

An elated Yeoh said, “I’m just going to stand here and take this all in. 40 years…I’m not letting go of this. When I first came to Hollywood, it was a dream come true – until I got here. I came here and was told, ‘You’re a minority.’”

Golden Globes Music Shut

Yeoh was not alone in ‘shutting down’ the  Golden Globes music that was disturbing their speeches.

Farrell, an Irish actor, won Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical, or Comedy for his role in the Martin McDonagh film, his second Oscar after winning for In Bruges in 2009.

Farrell used the first minute of his speech after taking the stage to congratulate those who presented him with the award and then went on to thank his co-stars, including Brendan Gleeson and Kerry Condon, but the music started playing, indicating that he needed to finish his speech.

“You can forget about that piano,” Farrell said before proceeding with his speech.

The Golden Globe awards made a comeback this year after a massive controversy that got it boycotted in 2022 with claims of corruption and lacking in diversity.

Everything Everywhere All at Once is an independent comedy that scored six Golden Globes nominations including best musical, or comedy, best director and screenplay, best supporting actor and best supporting actress. The film made $100 million globally at the box office.
