In a case of poor relationship, Phillip Hughes, 62, a grandfather from Texas is facing murder charges after purportedly stabbing his 8-year-old grandson to death.
Responding to a call about a stabbing involving a juvenile victim, police officers of the Richland Hills Police Department immediately went to a house in the 3500 block of Labadie Drive in Richland Hills, west of Dallas.
According to Fox 4 reports, the officers found Brenym McDonald, an 8-year-old boy, lying dead at the scene in a bedroom of his grandfather’s home.
In a statement, the police said that the suspect, identified as the boy’s grandfather, was found near the residence.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner said that the cause of death was sharp force injuries to the boy’s neck and chest, as reported by Fox 4.
Phillip Hughes The killer
Phillip Hughes was arrested and taken into police custody. While no motive has been determined yet, the police continue to investigate the merciless killing of the boy.
Hughes was taken to the Joint Detention Center at North Richland Hills where he is being held for capital murder while he awaits his arraignment.
“This is still an ongoing active investigation,” police said in the statement. “However, based on the initial investigation it is believed that no other suspects are involved.”
The slain grandson
In a GoFundMe arranged to help cover funeral expenses, family friend Maddox Sullivan describes Brenym as “smart, enthusiastic, always smiling with the biggest heart.
“There wasn’t a single room he couldn’t light up with his smile, or a story he couldn’t tell you that would make you laugh.
“A mother does not ever expect to have to bury their own child. We’re all devastated by this tragic event and not prepared for his unexpected passing.”
Calling the boy’s death “a senseless tragedy,” the department expressed condolences to the bereaved family and asked “for continued prayers for everyone involved.”
