Shakira can finally breathe a sigh of relief as he ex-husband Gerard Pique will be handing over custody of their sons to her.
The Colombian singing bombshell and the retired soccer player’s agreement will also make it easier for her to move back to the United States.
According to the La Vanguardia newspaper, the couple and their lawyers were in negotiations for 12 hours.
Pique will spend Christmas with his children before they head off to Miami to start school in 2023.
The newspaper report also stated that within the first 30 minutes of negotiations, Pique had stormed off. He was apparently concerned that if his kids spent too much time away it might affect their relationship with their grandparents who live next door to them in Spain.
In a statement to USA Today on November 8, the couple said, “Our sole objective is to provide our children with the utmost security and protection and hope that they can continue with their lives in a safe and calm environment. We appreciate that their privacy will be respected.”
The couple broke up in June announcing the end of their union through a PR agency.
“We regret to confirm that we are parting ways. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you for your understanding.”
The couple first met in 2010 at the Rock in Rio festival. The couple became an item after Shakira 45, and Pique 35, finished promoting her 2010 World Cup anthem Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).
The singer became pregnant in 2012 and the duo have been together for 11 years although they never got married.
Shakira had earlier said that she actually feared marriage. “To tell you the truth, marriage scares… me. I don’t want (Pique) to see me as a wife. I’d rather him see me as his girlfriend. His lover, his girlfriend. It’s like a little forbidden fruit, you know?”.
