Pro-Life Advocates Gather in Washington for 50th Annual March for Life

On January 22nd, pro-life advocates from across the country gathered in Washington D.C for the 50th annual March for Life protest against abortion.

This year marks the first march since the landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade was overturned over the summer. In past years, the march would take place at the Supreme Court building, but this year the focus has shifted to legislative action, leading the march to take place at the Capitol building.

The rally preceding the march featured speakers such as former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, Bishop Michael Burbidge, and Reverend Franklin Graham, as well as House Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Rep.

Chris Smith (R-NJ). The organization behind the march stated that while the overturning of Roe v. Wade allows for more freedom at the state level to enact pro-life laws, the work to create a culture of life in the United States is far from over.

In 2020, the number of abortions in America was still over 900,000, and is expected to decrease by only 200,000 in a post-Roe America.

The March for Life has been protesting abortion in America since January 20, 1973, one year after the Roe v. Wade decision was handed down by the Supreme Court.

Every year since 1974, pro-lifers have gathered to show their support for the unborn and to call for the overturn of Roe v. Wade. With the case now overturned, the march’s organizers say their fight is just getting started.

State March Initiative

This year’s event will be an opportunity to reflect, celebrate and look forward to what’s next. The organization’s president, Jeanne Mancini, stated that in addition to the national march, they will also be expanding their state march initiative.

Last year they were in five states, this year they will be in ten, and they plan to be in all 50 states in the next 5-7 years. The march’s participants believe that this is just the beginning of a new movement to abolish the word abortion and protect the rights of the unborn for future generations.
