Now that its confirmed that Netflix’s superhit series Squid Game will be returning for a second season, its creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has revealed which characters will be back.
Hwang revealed that Lee Jung-Jae’s Gihun and Lee Byung-hun’s The Front Man will be returning for the sophomore season. “Gi-hun for sure. He will be back and I believe the Front Man will be back too,” Hwang said.
Though the plot details remain sketchy, the announcement that these two characters will be returning is unsurprising as the first season concluded with Gi-hun, who is the only survivor of the game, vowing to put an end to the annual life-or-death tournament.
Hwang also said that the themes that were present in the show such as the economic polarity will continue to be part of the series going forward.
“For this project and in future projects, it’s impossible not to consider the political polarization, the cultural differences and difficulties as well as environmental climate changes that have been happening. I will be forced to observe and criticize and continue to handle these topics in future projects.”
One of the most watched shows on Netflix, Squid Games revolves around a contest where 456 players, all of whom are penniless, risk their lives to play a series of deadly children’s games for the chance to win 45.6 billion won.
The children’s games include Red Light, Green Light and Tug of War however the consequence of losing is death.
Season One of the series featured Park Hse-soo as Sang-woo, Jung Ho-Yeon as Sae-byeok, O Yeong-Su as II-nam, Heo Sung-tae as Deok-su, Anupam Tripathi as Ali, Kim Joo-ryoung as Mi-Ny do and Wi Ha-Jon as Hwang Jun-ho.
