Singapore — Yahoo just released its Year in Review 2021, and Lawrence Wong and Jeanette Aw topped the most-searched lists for male and female celebrities for this year.

The actor can credit his roles in Chinese dramas Story Of Yanxi Palace and Girlfriend, for helping him boot Mandopop superstar JJ Lin off the top spot. The singer is second on the list. Former Mediacorp actor Shane Pow, who ran afoul of the law for the second time for drink driving, is ranked third, with Mark Lee and Elvin Ng rounding out the top 5.

By the way, Lawrence also launched a skincare line, Grail, this year, ICYMI.

Jeannette Aw took her passion for baking to the next level by opening her own sweet shop, Once Upon A Time, in Jalan Besar this year. Taking second place on Yahoo’s list of most-searched female celebrities this year is the always-fabulous Fann Wong. Newly-engaged heiress and philanthropist Kim Lim took third place, followed by socialite Jamie Chua in fourth, and actress Joanne Pet in fifth place.

Among international celebrities, Kim Seon-ho, who rose to fame due to the popular Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha and Kris Wu, a Chinese Canadian rapper, were the most searched males. As for the female counterparts, Singaporeans searched for Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, and Kim Kardashian, who perhaps represents a US-type of royalty, took the top spots.

Yahoo also revealed that Singaporeans were as obsessed with Squid Game as the rest of the world is. The Korean series has gone on to become Netflix’s top-viewed program in 94 countries, being watched in 142 million households since it debuted in September. At number two is World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), for which we can thank local wrestler Sean Tan.

The two most popular-searched movies of the year are Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings and Raya and the Last Dragon.

As for food, Singaporeans may have reached for the comfort of the familiar during the second year of the pandemic, with Nasi Lemak and Bak Kut Teh as the two most-searched foods for the year, followed by Bubble tea in third. Famous and delicious local delicacies such as Hokkien Mee, Carrot Cake, Laksa, and the internationally recognised Chilli Crab, made the list this time around at sixth to ninth place respectively, after all, four missed the cut last year.

Yahoo also kept track of the most searched cryptocurrencies this year. The list is led by Bitcoin and Ethereum in the number one and two spots respectively, with Dogecoin, ranked third, perhaps due to Elon Musk saying it may be accepted as payment when people buy Tesla vehicles. /TISG
