In the speech made by President Joko (Jokowi) Widodo at the inauguration, there was no mention of corruption eradication in his inaugural address for the 2019-2024 mandate.
Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Deputy Chairman Saut Situmorang had his own views. According to him, Jokowi’s speech should not be interpreted as pessimistic when it comes to eradicating corruption, although the latter did not specifically address the issue.
Saut said, in his speech, Jokowi broadly alluded to the eradication of corruption. According to him, in Jokowi’s speech the latter alluded to the dream of the Republic of Indonesia for -2019-2045 and without the issue of eradicating of corruption, that dream could not be realised.
“In the speech the dream (for a future Indonesia) was mentioned, and this explicitly or implicitly ‘include’ (sic) combating corruption, because your dream in 2045 will be difficult to achieve if corrupt behavior continues,” said Saut.
On October 20, (Yesterday), Jokowi was officially appointed as President for his second term, continuing where he left off to campaign for the re-election.
He has a new vice-President, Prof. Dr. K.H. Ma’ruf Amin. In the plenary session of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly for the 2019-2024 period, Jokowi and Ma’ruf pledged the oath of office in front of the assembly, headed by MPR Chair Bambang Soesatyo.
In his speech, Jokowi greeted Prabowo Subianto, his tough political opponent in the 2019 Presidential Election, calling him “best friend”. Initially Jokowi had greeted PDIP Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri as “mother”.
“With all respect, dear mother Megawati Sukarnoputri,” said Jokowi. Jokowi also greeted a number of other public figures such as Vice President Jusuf Kalla and his deputy Ma’ruf Amin.
Jokowi also met with the general chairman of the Indonesian Workers Coalition (KIK), an alliance that was critical in the 2019 Presidential Election.
And last of all, Jokowi greeted Prabowo jokingly saying that he would never forget his “best friend”.
“And also not forget my best friend Gerindra chairperson Prabowo Subianto,” said Jokowi who was greeted with applause from the audience.
The “enemity” between Jokowi and Prabowo continued after the announcement of the Presidential election result in April.
Observers believe Probowo had tried to create trouble ahead of the results announcement, but pulled off from street protests on the eve of the announcement in May.
Protests and riots took place on May 21 and continued the next day in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, mainly around the Tanah Abang district of Central Jakarta and in West Jakarta.
Six were reportedly killed and 200 injured in the violent protests that was organised to protest Jokowi’s victory in the Presidentials. -/TISG
