Check out the new comedy by Pachyderm Theatre at the Goodman Arts Centre Black Box this May. The play entitled Sylvia will be on from May 18 to 22.
Sylvia is a modern romantic comedy penned by Pulitzer Prize nominee A.R Gurney. Gurney was nominated for the Dining Room and Love Letters. Directed by Pavan J Singh the play starts Alexandra Kong, Rebekah Sangeetha Dorai, Susie Penrice Tyrie and Sean Worall.
The play is a feel good story about an unlikely love triangle that places a pet dog at the centre of the action. The story opens with the possibilities for a whole new life for middle-aged empty nesters Kate and Greg when they sell their home in the suburbs and down-size to a fashionable park-view apartment in the city.
Kate is passionate about her new career teaching English literature to junior high school students and has fallen in love with everything that the big city has to offer. The museums, the galleries, music venues, the theatres… finally she and Greg can begin a brand new chapter after a lifetime of parenting. How lucky can you get? All this plus a swanky apartment with spectacular views of the park.
It is at this very park where her hubby Greg who is on the edge of an existential crisis meets Sylvia an exuberant and beautiful lab/poodle mix, astray in Central Park, looking for a new home. When they meet, it is love at first sight. But his wife Kate is looking forward to some independence now that the couple no longer have children to care for, and she is less than thrilled by the clever and coquettish canine who jumps, slobbers, sits on her couch, and takes Greg’s attention away from his marriage.
This unlikely scenario sets the scene for a comic battle of wits as Kate tries to rescue her 25 year marriage from domestic mayhem.
