TVB actress Jessica Hsuan fired manager who said she was too “fat and old” to continue acting

Hong Kong actress Jessica Hsuan said that she had a falling out with her manager five years ago because she was told she was too fat and old to act.

The popular TVB drama actress who is now 51 spoke about her career trajectory spanning over three decades.

She has appeared in some of TVBs most successful dramas including File of Justice, Detective Investigation Files IV, Square Pegs and My Unfair Lady.

Not just a pretty face, but the actress who came into films quite by accident holds a masters in aerospace engineering from Imperial College London.

She recounted her anxieties about hitting the big 30 years ago.“I felt that I was past my prime, is it time to get married? What should I do…?” she shared, recalling how she had even cried then.

Ironically getting older and after going through her forties and fifties her perspective has changed and she started to feel like life is just beginning.

Hsuan shared all of the above on the Lu Yu You Yue talkshow.

She said that she still loves her job very much even after 30 years. Recalling an episode five years back when she was 46 she said she was told by her artiste manager that she was getting “old and fat” and was advised to find another job.

“My voice turned low, and I asked her, ‘For sure?’ But very quickly I looked into the mirror at home and thought to myself, it surely isn’t that bad!”

She then made the decision to terminate her contract with the manager instead.

Her pairing with Louis Koo has always been popular as an onscreen couple and the duo are also good friends in real life. She is signed on to his company One Cool Film Production Limited and described their friendship as “brotherly”.

“I treat myself as half a man, and he also treats me as half a man,” said Hsuan jokingly admitting that they have both supported each other through thick and thin over the years.
