Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy star Justin H Min has landed a leading role in a new film titled Shortcomings.

The film has a star studded cast including Spider Man’s Jacob Batalon, Gossip Girl’s Tavi Gevinson, Insatiable’s Debby Ryan, House of the Dragon’s Sonora Mizuno, Veep’s Timothy Simons, Good Trouble’s Sherry Cola and Toy Story 4’s Ali Maki.

Shortcomings tells the story of a theatre manager Ben and his best friend Alice as they have to deal with his girlfriend Miko as well as Alice’s serial-dating habits and other obstacles which hamper their personal development.

The movie is comedic as it deals with topics like racial politics, sexual norms and pop culture.

The movie is produced by Randall Park who told Variety magazine that it was a joy watching talented performers bring these characters to life.

“I am extremely proud to helm a movie that will finally show the world that the Asian American experience includes eating various sandwiches in diners.”

The story is based on the graphic novel by Adrian Tomine who adapted the screenplay and served as an executive producer on the film.

Before Shortcomings, Park is best known for acting and directing sitcom Fresh Off the Boat in which he stars opposite Crazy Rich Asian’s Constance Wu.

Min shot to fame playing the role of Ben Hargreaves in The Umbrella Academy which is an American superhero series based on the comic book of the same name. It revolves around a dysfunctional family of adopted sibling superheroes who reunite to solve the mystery of their father’s death and the threat of an imminent apocalypse.

The series also stars Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castaneda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Cameron Britton and Mary J. Blige.

The first season was streamed on Netflix on February 15, 2019.

He also played the titular role in After Yang in 2021 which is a science fiction drama film starring Colin Farrell, Jodie Turner-Smith and Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja. The plot revolves around a family trying to repair their unresponsive robotic child.

Min received much acclaim for his role as the robotic child. Kogonada’s After Yang explores themes of grief, loss and humanity through an adopted artificially intelligent child/robot.
