Most people wash their clothes pretty often specifically after one or maybe two wears but the debate on how often jeans should be washed has been ongoing for years.

Denim lovers have attested to the fact that if they wash their jeans too often it impacts its shape and color and keeping them unwashed improves their appearance.

Die-hard denim fans also say this keeps the jeans in shape and doesn’t corrode the color too much as not washing them prevents the fibres from wearing down leading to holes and rips.

Levi Strauss CEO Charles Bergh clarifies a statement to this effect which he made in 2014 in a recent interview with CNBC in an episode of Managing Asia.

“I never said don’t wash your jeans.” He does however say he would never use a washing machine for denim.

“True denim heads, people that really love their denim, will tell you to never put your denim into a washing machine. So that’s what I do.”

The jeans washing story

Although he may not wash his jeans as often as we’d like he still makes sure they are clean.

“If I drop some curry on my jeans, I’m gonna clean it. But I’ll spot clean it. And if they get really gross you know, if I’ve been out sweating or something and they get really gross, I’ll wash them in the shower.”

Bergh says that in the US people may wash their jeans after every wear while in other regions the clothes could go in the machine after several wears.

He does say that hygiene is not the only consideration as washing machines use a lot of water. Hand washing clothes could be more sustainable for the environment, as synthetic clothes also release micro plastics when washed which contributes to pollution.

Bearing that in mind, there may be a strong case for putting your jeans into the machine less frequently.
