Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith were in the news for all the wrong reasons a couple of months ago. The couple made their first public appearance on Aug 13 post the infamous slapping of Chris Rock by Will Smith during the Oscars.
The couple were seen leaving the posh Nobu restaurant in Malibu recently with Will sporting a baseball cap and a casual shirt paired with slacks while Jada Pinkett wore buzz-cut black pants and a fitted long sleeve collared shirt paired with big-rim sunglasses during the outing. She was seen holding on to her hubby’s shirt as she walked just behind. The couple was smiling and appeared to be in a good mood.
Will issued a public apology to Chris Rock for slapping him while on stage at the Oscars.
“I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk. I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk and when he is he will reach out. So I will say to you, Chris. I apologize to you. My behaviour was unacceptable.”
Interestingly Will also admitted that slapping Rock was not only because of what he said about his wife (the GI Jane comment alluding to her baldness). He admitted that he had some issues with Rock from the past that culiminated in that angry response.
“Disappointing people is my central trauma. I hate when I let people down. So it hurts. It hurts me psychologically and emotionally to know I didn’t live up to people’s image and impression and the work I’m trying to do. I am deeply remorseful and I’m trying to be remorseful without being ashamed of myself. I’m human and I made a mistake and I’m trying not to think of myself as a piece of s**t.
“I know it was confusing, I know it was shocking, but I promise you I am deeply devoted and committed to putting light and love and joy into the world and you know if you hang on, I promise we’ll be able to be friends again.”
Where Chris Rock is concerned, he told Entertainment Tonight that he has no intention of speaking to Will Smith.
