Ripa

Popular actress Kelly Ripa spoke about the perks of menopause recently. In a podcast titled Let’s Talk Off Camera, Ripa who is 53, says, “I love not getting my period. There – I said it.”

She broke down the issues relating to menopause with women’s health expert Erika Schwartz M.D. Ripa said that many of her women friends were embarrassed about the transition and often refused to talk about it.

“They routinely tell me they still get their periods regularly. They’re talking to me, an open book, and still cannot bring themselves to talk about having gone through menopause. It is too scary for them to acknowledge. People still whisper the word menopause,” she said.

Dr Schwartz agrees saying that the problem was also because people were not armed with the right information. The ageist stereotype remains for many women who think that beyond menopause they are no longer useful.

Ripa also talks about the changes she went through during perimenopause including mood swings, low libido, joint pain and headaches as her estrogen began to drop. At that point she said she could barely sit up and she couldn’t figure out what was wrong and that’s when Schwartz said that you were probably perimenopausal and she was like  “No that can’t be because I get my periods regularly” but she was told that that is in effect what menopause is all about.

The actress said she also had a dip in her sex drive and vaginal dryness which are normal things that occur during this phase of life. Her advice? Exercise, eat right, get plenty of rest and prioritize sex rather than give up on it.

Plus points

Ripa has since done so and talks about some of the fun and good things since hitting menopause.

“My first Memorial Day through Labor Day after menopause… It was the summer of the white pant because I never had to worry about wearing white pants.”

She said that some may say life is over after menopause but in some ways for her it’s just beginning.
