Today’s Webtoon is a Korean remake of the 2016 Japanese series Sleepeeer Hit! The SBS drama is a set against South Korea’s competitive webtoon industry. Recently the cast of the show got together to share what kind of webtoon characters they wish the could be.
But before that here’s some background about the series.
The show depicts the story of On Ma Eum played by Kim Sejeong who is a former judo athlete who joins Neon Webtoon’s editorial department as a new employee and struggles to mature into a true editor amidst South Korea’s competitive webtoon industry.
On Ma Eum gives up her Olympic dreams after an injury and she then decides to venture into the world of webtoons and her travails as a rookie employee are well portrayed.
The next main character is Nam Yoon Su who plays Goo Joon Young who joins webtoon editorial alongside On Ma Eum. Nam is a top student and good looking to boot with a charming demeanour and a way with words. So his character is perpetually in the spotlight no matter what.
The fickle minded deputy editor Seok Ji Hyung is played by Choi Daniel. His inscrutable expression leaves his employees frequently at their wits end.
During an interview recently the three actors spoke about what they would like to be if they were in a webtoon.
“I would be a rich person who doesn’t gain weight no matter what I eat. I want to be a writer who goes around famous restaurants all over the world, eats only delicious food and writes a travel diary,” said Kim Sejeong.
Her character On Ma Eum also eats and exercises with equal enthusiasm in the show.
Choi Daniel’s answer was rather creative, he said, “I want to be the world’s strongest man who uses omnipotent superpowers.” This was an interesting contrast to his role where he is solves all editorial problems and is omnipotent in another sense.
Nam Yoon Su was even more surprising with his answer opting to be handicapped just so he can exact revenge in a role not unlike that of a noir film. “I’d like to be a blunt cold and charismatic character who loses one leg in an unexpected accident and sets out for revenge, like the man in the movie The Man From Nowhere,” he said.
Today’s Webtoon will premiere on July 29 and is available on Viki.
