Following the deadly shooting of Halyna Hutchins on the “Rust” set, Alec Baldwin and the armourer will face charges of involuntary manslaughter, reports reported today, after they were formally charged.
In connection with the death of Hutchins, Alec Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed will each face two counts of involuntary manslaughter. What sort of punishment they would get if proven guilty is still a mystery.
Alec Baldwin Shot Hutchins
The family of Halyna Hutchins, who was the film’s director of photography, thanked prosecutors for their decision, adding that they felt some comfort in the ruling.
“It is a comfort to the family that, in New Mexico, no one is above the law,” the family said in a statement released by attorney Brian J. Panish.
“After a thorough review of the evidence and the laws of the state of New Mexico, I have determined that there is sufficient evidence to file criminal charges against Alec Baldwin and other members of the ‘Rust’ film crew,” New Mexico First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies reportedly said. “On my watch, no one is above the law, and everyone deserves justice.”
“The evidence clearly shows a pattern of criminal disregard for safety on the ‘Rust’ film set. In New Mexico, there is no room for film sets that don’t take our state’s commitment to gun safety and public safety seriously,” Andrea Reeb, the special prosecutor assigned to the case, said.
According to New Mexico First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, Alec Baldwin and Gutierrez Reed are each charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter so that a jury might determine which particular count might be more suitable.
The prosecution stated that if Alec Baldwin and Reed are found guilty, “they will only be punished to one count.”
According to the prosecution, a conviction in either situation carries a penalty of up to $5,000 in fines and 18 months in jail.
However, because a firearm was involved in one crime, there would be an added required sentence. According to the prosecution, the offence might then result in a mandatory five-year prison sentence.
