A number of employees at Amazon India broke down and cried after being let go. Amazon laid off almost 1,000 people at its India offices and plans to retrenched 17,000 workers worldwide.

Photos of employees crying were posted on Grapevine, a community app for Indian professionals. According to Grapevine 75% of the staff had to leave the company.

“Although I’m in the remaining [25%], I don’t feel motivated to work anymore. They are firing people in cabins. People are crying in the office,” said one employee in a post.

“You can hear people breaking down and crying in the office. 75% of my team is gone, I’m still employed but don’t feel like working anymore.”

Amazon employees Break Down

According to a Tech Times report, the lay-offs took place in Bengaluru, Gurugram, Pune and other areas with the majority of shutdowns being startups.

Amazon is not off the hook however as it has been served with a notice by the Labour Commission office in Pune for their huge layoffs and voluntary separation policies.

“Livelihood of 1000s of employees and their families has now been made vulnerable. As per procedures laid down under the Industrial Dispute Act, the employer cannot, without prior permission from the appropriate government, layoff an employee featuring on the muster rolls of the establishment,” said Harpreet Singh Saluja, President of the employees union Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES).

The Union Labour Ministry also issued a demand in Bengaluru which states: “You [Amazon] are therefore requested to attend this office with all relevant records in the matter either personally or through an authorized representative on the aforesaid date and time without fail.”

According to NITES, Amazon has been accused of breaking labor laws prompting the organization to submit a complaint. NITES has since written to Union Labour Minister Bhupender Yadav stating that employees at Amazon had been forcibly terminated.

Amazon’s will fire 17,000 people

The company had earlier reported that it will retrench 17,000 people namely from the Amazon Stores together with People, Experience and Technology (PXT) groups.

It’s CEO Andy Jassy said that the company anticipates further layoffs in the first quarter of 2023.
