Mel B has disclosed that her fiancé, Rory McPhee, has played a significant role in boosting her self-esteem and making her feel more confident than ever. This transformation came after she alleged that her ex-husband, Stephen Belafonte, had repeatedly insulted her, calling her “fat and ugly.” The Spice Girls member, who got engaged to McPhee in October 2022, spoke in an interview with the Sun, emphasizing how her current partner consistently expresses love and admiration for her. She credited McPhee, along with the support of her family and trusted friends, for helping rebuild her self-esteem.

Mel B, a former judge on “America’s Got Talent,” also opened up about the emotional trauma she claimed to have endured during her marriage to Belafonte, which lasted from 2007 to 2017. She alleged that he frequently made hurtful comments about her appearance, which eroded her self-confidence over time. Mel B described how such comments can deeply affect a person, leading them to see themselves as “worthless” when looking in the mirror. Belafonte has denied these allegations of emotional abuse.

Love, respect and support in marriage

Despite facing public scrutiny throughout her career, Mel B explained that she was not prepared for the harsh criticism about her physical appearance from her husband, as it is fundamentally different when it comes from someone you expect love, respect, and support from within a marriage.

Mel B and Belafonte share a daughter, Madison, who is 11 years old. In 2017, Mel B first accused her ex-husband of abuse, including physical and sexual exploitation, allegations that Belafonte vehemently denied. After a protracted legal battle, their bitter divorce was finalized in August 2018.

McPhee proposed romantically

Following the divorce, Mel B began a relationship with Rory McPhee in 2019, culminating in their engagement three years later. McPhee proposed in a romantic setting, filled with rose petals and a log fire during a trip to Berkshire, England. Mel B has been previously married to Jimmy Gulzar from 1998 to 2000, with whom she shares a daughter named Phoenix Chi, now 24. Additionally, she has a daughter named Angel Iris Murphy Brown, who is 16, from her relationship with actor Eddie Murphy.
