Geert Wilders

Geert Wilders, a Dutch politician who is soon to be Prime Minister of the country, seems to have stirred up conversations all over social media. His strict anti-immigration and discrimination policies towards certain religions instils fear to the minorities living in the Netherlands. To some, this is reminiscent of 1930s Europe.

Al Jazeera states, the political landscape in Europe could soon witness a significant shift with Geert Wilders potentially becoming the Netherlands’ next prime minister following a historic win in the recent elections. His Party for Freedom secured 37 seats in the 150-seat legislature, the largest single bloc, surpassing outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s conservative People’s Party (24 seats) and the left-wing Labour-Green coalition (25 seats).

Wilders, historically known for his anti-immigration stance and skepticism towards European Union influence on national decisions, emphasized curbing migration and fostering economic stability. Despite past electoral success without securing office, his recent landslide victory signifies a pivotal moment.

This triumph underscores Wilders’ longstanding anti-Islam and anti-EU agenda, advocating the withdrawal of asylum and intensified scrutiny on migration. Experts note that Wilders’ alignment with voters’ concerns about rising costs and immigration, particularly amid the Ukraine crisis, contributed significantly to his success.

Unfortunately, Geert Wilders’ mindset is bringing out people with dark thoughts. Those who are anti-Muslims and anti-Jews appear to be his main supporters. Others are accusing a portion of minorities in Europe for the current problems they are facing now. To some, this may be reminiscent of the 1930s when the Nazis rose to power.

Many are in fact not looking forward to him being the leader of the country. Renegotiating with the EU after leaving the union will be another unnecessary headache for the Netherlands. Users are observing what is happening to the United Kingdom, especially after it left the European Union.

Others feel that he will pull the Netherlands back into the dark ages as users feel he is preaching only for the ethnically Dutch people. They feel that he might place the same discrimination towards other White people who are not Dutch as well.
