After any kind of big meal the last thing you want to be thinking of doing is going for a walk but it’s probably the best thing you can do for yourself.
Primary care physician at Mount Sinai Doctors-Ansonia, Dr Heather Viola says there are a number of reasons why a post meal walk can really help you.

Better digestion

Many people suffer from bloating, constipation, acid reflux and one of the best ways to relieve this is to go for a quick walk after your meal.

“Walking after eating [stimulates] your stomach and intestines, making your food move through you more quickly and [aid with digestion], says Viola.

Reduce heart disease risk

Regular walking is also good for your heart as it helps to lower your cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. Just 10 to 15 minutes is all you need if you can’t squeeze in a long walk after meals.

Regulate blood sugar

If you remain too sedentary after a meal especially a big meal your blood sugar levels might experience excessive spikes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that having too much sugar in the bloodstream will overwhelm the liver and muscles and cause the insulin in our bodies to store any excess in other places. Over time the body becomes insulin-resistant and that’s when diabetes may kick in.

Weight loss

Walking is perhaps one of the most effective ways to maintain or lose weight. Viola says to lose one pound, you need to burn about 3,500 calories. Walking also helps with appetite regulation and prevents you from snacking unnecessarily.

Better sleep

Walking after dinner specifically helps regulate the circadian rhythms: it makes the body follow a natural sleep-wake cycle. It also helps with post meal stomach discomfort ensuring better sleep.
