In a move that has ignited fierce debate, J.D. Vance, the venture capitalist-turned-Republican U.S. senator from Ohio, announced his support for the mass deportation of an estimated 20 million undocumented immigrants in the United States.
Vance gained national attention with his best-selling book, Hillbilly Elegy, which he claimed represented the forgotten people of middle America. However, critics derided it as “poverty porn”, suggesting it pandered to audiences who misunderstand urban poverty.
This weekend, an anonymous Twitter account known for provoking liberal outrage posted:
“I’m so sick of this administration. I’m 23 years old. I’m ready to buy a house and start putting my roots down, but I have to stick to renting because the house market is ridiculous. Vote for the convicted felon. This shit is getting old.”
Mass deportation
James Surowiecki, author of The Wisdom of Crowds, responded, questioning how Trump’s policies would help the frustrated young adult purchase a home. Surowiecki pointed out the fallacy in the belief that simply re-electing Trump would lower mortgage rates, dismissing it as “magical thinking”.
Senator Vance, who is considered a top contender for Trump’s vice-presidential running mate, seized the moment to bolster his stance against undocumented immigrants.
“Not having 20 million illegal aliens who need to be housed (often at public expense) will make housing more affordable for American citizens,” Vance, a multimillionaire, stated. He also accused the left of ridiculing those suffering under Biden’s policies.
Vance’s comments were met with severe backlash. Fred Wellman, former executive director of the Lincoln Project, lambasted Vance on social media:

How many billions will be spent to build the fascist ‘deportation force’? Camps? Flights? What does any of that have to do with interest rates and housing costs? You are a liar and a propagandist. It’s pathetic how someone who was once a Marine is such a morally bankrupt loser now.”
As the debate rages on, Vance’s stance on mass deportations continues to polarize public opinion, highlighting the deep divisions in American politics over immigration and economic policy.
