The 1980s sci-fi show, Stranger Things launched its third season recently and it has broken all Netflix’s viewing records, said the streaming service in a tweet.
The TV show which is about a bunch of suburban adolescents fighting off supernatural monsters has been watched by 40.7 million account holders in just four days.
That figure for season three was “more than any other film or series in its first four days,” the company said late Monday.
“And 18.2 million have already finished the entire season.”
With over 140 million subscribers worldwide, Netflix is the market leader in global television and film streaming.
Netflix occasionally publishes viewing figures for certain shows but the majority of its data is closely guarded.
The streaming service is under increasing pressure from rivals such as Amazon, Disney and Apple.
By comparison, Netflix in December said over 45 million accounts had streamed the Sandra Bullock film Bird Box a week after its launch.
With no independent verification or details on the criteria for measuring a full “viewing” available, some analysts expressed scepticism over the statistic.
Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston’s Murder Mystery also broke records with 30 million accounts viewing in just three days. -/TISG
