Chelsea Clinton confirms she is thinking about running for office

Ex-US President Bill Clinton and two-time failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s daughter confirmed, in an interview released on Wednesday, that she is now considering running for political office.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a promotional event, the 38-year-old responded to a question on her possible political ambitions as such: “I think if someone were to step down or retire and I thought I could do a good job and it matched my talents, I’d have to think if it’s the right choice for me.

“I don’t have any plans to run for office, but it is something I think about as I hope every young person thinks about it. If you care about what’s happening in the world, you have to care about running for and holding elected office. I hope it’s a question that we ask ourselves.”

In the course of the past year, Chelsea Clinton has flipped-flopped on whether she has political ambitions and has changed her views at least four times, since March 2017.

In March last year, Chelsea said that she would definitely not run for public office. Then in May this year, she encouraged those asking her to run for office to throw their names in the hat themselves.

Two months ago, in August, Chelsea again changed her views and said that she was a “definite maybe” on running for office before indicating to reporters now that she is indeed thinking of entering politics if there is an open seat.

The only child of Bill and Hillary Clinton, Chelsea used to work as a special correspondent for NBC News from 2011 to 2014 before moving on to work with her parents’ Clinton Foundation and Clinton Global Initiative. Since 2011, she has taken on a prominent role at the foundation and has a seat on its board.

She is now promoting children’s books she has written that aim to inspire children to “make a difference.”
