Now that going to the movies is possible again, there are a bunch of Korean movies that are simply not to be missed. Here are a few that broke the box office with sales of more than 10 million.

  1. Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds

The story revolves around three grim reapers Ha Jung Woo, Kim Huang Gi and Jo Ji Hoon who have to guide a firefighter for 49 days. They foursome are required to pass seven trials within the 49 days and if they are successful they will be re born.

The movie is from a webtoon series and was released in Dec 2017.

  1. A Taxi Driver

Song Kang Ho acts as a struggling taxi driver who is constantly trying to make ends meet. His golden opportunity to make some money arises when he gets the chance to take German journalist Peter to Gwanju from Seoul and back in one day for 100,000 won. The journalist is a political reporter.

Also released in 2017, this heart-warming story which chronicles the bond between the journalist and the driver and the turmoil they experience on their journey made the movie extremely popular. It was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Fim at the 90th Academy Awards.

  1. The Attorney

Song Woo Seok is an attorney specializing in tax law. His goal is to make money no matter what the cost. However his perspective changes when he meets and defends Park Jin Woo, a student activist who is charged with a crime.

This film is based on a real story that occurred in South Korea and is a critically acclaimed movie.

  1. Parasite

Parasite tells the story of a poor family that schemes their way into living in the home of a rich family. The film which stars Song Kang Ho, Lee Sun Gyun, Cho Yeo Jeong, Choi Woo Shik and Park So Dam premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019 and became the first South Korean film to win the Palme d’Or.

Parasite was also the first South Korean film to win Best Picure at the Oscars. The film is written and directed by Bong Joon Ho.

  1. Veteran

This film tells the story of a detective who is trying to take down a criminal gang. The movie has Yoo Ah In in the role of the villain and Hwang Jung Min playing the detective. The film is a dark comedy of sorts with lots of action thrown in. The movie had more than 13 million ticket sales making it the top five highest grossing films in South Korean history.

Dialogue and scenes from the film are also commonly parodied.
