Fired for using the break room: Reddit's verdict on an employee's termination
A post on Reddit’s r/jobs talked about someone who worked at a small law firm that shared a suite with a larger firm, which owned the communal break room. A recurring issue with unwashed dishes prompted emails being sent to their boss, who responded by telling the original poster to “lay low” from the break room to prove they weren’t the ones leaving dirty dishes.
The original poster complied, but eventually started using it again, unaware that a formal ban had been communicated to their boss but never passed on to them.
The consequence: the larger firm withdrew the smaller firm's conference room privileges, and the original poster was fired over the phone. Their boss said he had "fought for them," but the other attorneys wouldn't budge — a claim the original poster noted made little sense given that their boss owned his own firm and the other attorneys had no actual say in the employment decision.
“I know this could have been prevented. It was my mistake,” the original poster wrote. “I’ve been crying the past two days because I really liked working there.”
What Reddit said
The thread was sympathetic, but also clear-eyed about where the actual failures in this situation lay.
One commenter cut to the most important distinction: “‘Lay low’ isn’t the same as ‘you’re banned.’ You should’ve asked, but your boss communicated poorly and firing you was excessive.”
Others focused on the inter-firm politics that had apparently been driving the situation long before the break room became an issue. “I’m confused. If the suite is shared, how does one party ‘own’ the break room over another? This sounds like some petty rivalry drama between firms that has nothing to do with a break room," one commenter wrote.
Another described it plainly: “Grown people behaving badly. Bullies. This is so bizarre.”
One commenter offered the most straightforward comfort: “Sorry, that sucks. It sucks even more when you know it’s something you could have done differently.” And one kept it brief: “I would take this as a learning lesson.”

The original poster acknowledged their own part in what happened; they could have clarified the status of the ban before resuming use of the break room. That’s fair. But the thread’s reaction was that the termination was disproportionate, the communication from their boss was inadequate, and the inter-firm dynamic that ultimately cost them their job was a dispute between the two firms that had little to do with them personally.
