Actress Anne Heche died on August 12, a week after she was critically injured in a car crash. She was 53 years old. Doctors declared her brain dead which according to California law is the definition of death. She was placed on life support earlier in case appropriate organ donation was needed.
Her eldest son Homer, 20, told People magazine , “My brother Atlas and I lost our Mom. After six days of almost unbelievable emotional swings, I am left with deep wordless sadness. Hopefully my mom is free from pain and beginning to explore what I like to imagine as her eternal freedom.
“Over those six days, thousand of friends, family and fans made their hearts known to me. I am grateful for their love, as I am for the support of my Dad, Coley and my stepmom Alexi who continue to be my rock during this time. Rest In Peace Mom, I love you,” said Homer.
When news of the car crash which occurred in Los Angeles on August 5 came out, many thought she would survive as she was initially reported to be in stable condition. In fact firemen said that she had spoken to them while she was being rescued from the wreckage and ferried to the hospital.
However on August 8 an update was posted stating that she was “extremely critical” and had slipped into a coma.
Heche first big role was that of Johnny Depp’s girlfriend in gangster film Donny Brasco in 1997. She also appeared in the Wag the Dog, Volcano and I Know What You Did Last Summer.
She also started dating Ellen DeGeneres and suffered a lot of homophobic backlash during her three year relationship. Despite the backlash the filming of romantic film Six Days Seven Nights continued unabated for which she thanked Harrison Ford who went on with production.
More recently the actress appeared in the 2020 season of the US show Dancing with the Stars. She has also published her memoir titled Call Me Crazy, which details her stormy childhood. In the book she talks about how her father died of AIDS from same-sex relationships and how he repeatedly raped her as a child leading to her contracting genital herpes when young. However other members of her family have disputed this.
