Will Smith has spoken about why he slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars in March. Speaking to Trevor Noah on The Daily Show in November while promoting his film Emancipation, he refers to the incident as “a horrific night”.
“There were many nuances and complexities to it, you know but at the end of the day, I just – lost it.”
Smith admits that what was most painful to him was that his actions made it “hard for other people”.
“And it’s like I understood the idea where they say hurt people hurt people. That was a rage that had been bottled for a really long time.
“And I guess what I would say, you just never know what somebody is going through. I was going through something that night. Not that that justifies my behaviour at all.”
Will Smith and his Childhood
Noah brought up a childhood issue of Smith’s which was that he had always been afraid of conflict growing up, learning how to be a better person in a relationship.
“It was a lot of things. It was the little boy that watched his father beat up his mother, you know. All of that just bubbled up in that moment.” He also said that who he was in that moment was “not who I want to be”.
During the interview with Noah on Nov 28 he also revealed the impact the events had on those close to him – including his young nephew Dom, 9, who “stayed up late to see his Uncle Will” at the 94th Academy Awards.
“Why did you hit that man, Uncle Will?” Dom had asked him when he got home.
“We just got to be nice to each other, man. It’s hard. And I guess the thing that’s most painful for me is I took my heart and I made it hard for other people.”
Following the event, Smith has been banned from attending the awards for a decade. He has also apologized several times to Rock. This is what relationship issues can do to a person.
what does i love you mean
If Smith were to win an award for his new film Emancipation he would not be able to receive it in person due to the ban. Emancipation will arrive in cinemas on Dec 2 and will stream on Apple TV+ on Dec 9.
