Miley Cyrus no longer identifies strongly with her “Younger Now” phase.
Recently, the renowned artist premiered a poignant new music video for her latest song “Used to Be Young.” The video depicts her reflecting on her partying days and coming to grips with the reality that she has evolved from the person she once was.
In a press statement, Cyrus, who is now 30 years old, shared that the song is a tribute to acknowledging her past, embracing her present self, and looking forward to her future. She expressed pride when contemplating her history and optimism when envisioning what lies ahead.
Emotional
The lyrics of “Used to Be Young” portray Cyrus revisiting the years when she immersed herself in party culture, without any regrets despite now finding deeper significance in life as she matures.
Lines like “I know I used to be crazy / Messed up, but God was it fun / I know I used to be wild / That’s ’cause I used to be young” convey her sentiments. She cherishes the memories of those seemingly wasted nights and doesn’t view them as wasted at all.
Minimalist video
The music video features a minimalist approach, showing Cyrus walking along a dimly lit path, reminiscent of her “The Climb” video. She stops directly in front of the camera, wearing a Mickey Mouse t-shirt that pays homage to her days on the Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana.
While singing the emotional lyrics, Cyrus sheds tears for much of the video, ultimately breaking into a wide smile toward the end. This suggests that she has come to terms with her past and looks back on it fondly.
New music
“Used to Be Young” is Cyrus’ first single following the release of her album “Endless Summer Vacation” in March, which featured the hit “Flowers.”
The release of this new track aligns with an updated version of her Disney+ special released earlier in the year, titled “Endless Summer Vacation: Continued (Backyard Sessions).”
