Chris Pratt is said to have drank more than 100 glasses of water every day as he got ripped for his role as Star Lord in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy but doctors say he was in danger of water poisoning.
The actor made a big physical transformation when he was cast for the role and nutritionist Philip Goglia recommended that he drink a glass of water for every pound of his body weight.
“I was peeing all day long, every day. That part was a nightmare,” said Pratt. At 6 feet 2 inches it is estimated that he weighs somewhere between 180 and 220 pounds.
A Marvel Diet: Water poisoning risks
Dr Ryan Marino says that constant peeing isn’t the only risk of drinking too much water. Marino who is an expert in medical toxicology, emergency medicine and addiction medicine at University Hospitals in Cleveland said that it is highly unlikely Pratt was able to consume so much water.
The Marvel diet could lead to water poisoning which can cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting and confusion. Too much water can also cause an imbalance of electrolytes such as sodium which can lead to headaches, disorientation, cramps, seizures and even brain damage.
Water load
The human body can tolerate about a quart or 32 ounces of water per hour or 20 to 28 quarts per day, according to studies. Water poisoning occurs if people drink between two and four quarts in an hour or less or more than 5 liters in a few hours.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends 125 ounces per day for men and 91 ounces for women. However people who are highly active or eat more protein such as athletes can drink more.
