Jada Pinkett Smith, who has been in a 25-year marriage with Will Smith, expressed that the late rapper Tupac Shakur was her “soulmate.” During an interview with Rolling Out, she described him as such and speculated about the possibility of having shared past lives together.
When asked whether she regretted not taking her relationship with Shakur to a more romantic level, she explained that it wasn’t feasible because there was no romantic chemistry between them. She emphasized the deep bond of friendship and love they shared.
Friends with Shakur since the ’80s
Pinkett and Shakur met during their time at the Baltimore School for the Arts in the mid-’80s and remained close friends until Shakur’s tragic death in 1996.
In a previous interview, Pinkett remembered their first meeting, noting that although Shakur may not have initially appeared to be her type, he had a magnetic personality that drew her in. On the first day Shakur went over to her and introduced himself. She added that in high school, he was a little funny-looking.
She added that from looking at him, he was not the type of ‘cat’ that he would even deal with. Their connection was strong, even though neither of them anticipated the level of success they would achieve.
Pinkett and Smith got married
A year after Shakur’s passing, Pinkett married Will Smith, and they went on to have two children together. The couple share children Jaden, 25 and Willow, 22. Smith also fathered a son, Trey, 30 with former wife, Sheree Zampino. Will Smith confessed to feeling jealousy about Pinkett’s relationship with Shakur in the early days.
While Smith and Pinkett’s complex marriage has been the subject of media attention over the years, Pinkett recently revealed that they have been separated since 2016.
