Besides BTS, BLACKPINK, what are the other biggest and most popular K-pop bands globally? Here’s our take!
Korean pop music has taken the world by storm in the last decade or so. More fondly known as K-pop, the techno beats, the good-looking performers and their style has received much adulation globally.
The following is a list of the best K-pop bands that are currently trending:
BTS
This septet has a huge fan following with sell out arenas around the world. Also known as the Bangtan Boys the seven comprise of Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook.
BTS’ boasts 16 million listeners on Spotify and have sold more than 16 million albums to date. Their album Map of soul is the best selling album in Korean history.
In August 2020 BTS released Dynamite their first song to be completely in English which topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
The group also walked away with Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards. The BTS seven are currently on a break to explore solo albums.
Blackpink
Like most of the other girl groups Blackpink has risen to the top of girl groups for both their talent and their looks. The beauties comprise Jisoo, Jennie, Rose and Lisa.
In November 2019, they became the first ever K-pop band to join YouTube’s billion views club when their single Ddu-Du-Ddu-Du was played more than a billion times on site. The only other Korean who has achieved this is Psy for the very famous Gangnam style track.
SuperM
This one was formed in 2020 and features some of the most iconic performers. Also comprising seven members, it’s interesting to note that its current seven members are from hugely successful bands that are still in play, namely EXO, WayV, NCT 127 and SHINee.
BigBang
Big Bang was formed in 2006 and is fast becoming one of the biggest-selling and most popular boy bands in the world. However in March 2019, one of its members Seungri announced that he would be retiring due to sex scandals involving him.
Girls Generation
Also known as the Nation’s Girl Group in South Korea, Girls Generation is known for their electro pool music and they were crowned Top K-pop Girl Group of the Past Decade in 2017. The group has eight members comprising Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun.
EXO
This hugely popular band scored four number 1s on the Billboard World Albums chart. Formed in 2012, EXO consists of nine members Xiumin, Suh, Lay, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, D.O, Kai and Sehun. They are best known for their mix of R&B, hip hop and electronic dance music (EDM). The group also performed at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
Twice
With 19.8 million followers on Instagram, this girl group which was formed in 2015 is still hugely popular. With nine members comprising Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung and Tzuyu the group is known for the bubble gum beats in pop music and EDM.
NCT 127
NCT 127 has 11.5 million followers and are currently gearing up for a September comeback.
It will be their first album in 11 months since their repackaged album Favourite in October 2021. NCT 127 is basically a spin off of another band NCT. They made their debut in July 2016 with the single Firetruck and their original line up comprised of seven members; Tamil, Taeyong, Yuma, Jaehyun, Winwin, Mark and Haechan.
Stray Kids
A fourth generation group, Stray Kids exploded on the scenes with hits God’s menu and won Kingdom: Legendary War against five other major groups. The group currently has 15 million followers on Instagram.
ITZY
This group made their debut in 2019. They recently became the fourth pop girl group in history to have their album on Billboard 200 for three weeks. Itzy made it debut at number 8 on the Top 200 Album chart with mini album Checkmate. Itzy consists of Yeji, Lia, Ryujin, Chaeryeong and Yuna.
