A man was sentenced to 10 years and 8 months in prison, plus 12 strokes of the cane, after he was drunk, imagined his 8-year-old daughter was his ex-girlfriend, and used a vibrator to sexually assault her.
The incident happened on May 25 last year. At the time of the incident, the 8-year-old victim lived in a three-room HDB flat with the 37-year-old defendant, her grandparents and two relatives. To protect the victims, the court ordered the media not to report the names of the accused and the victims.
The facts of the case showed that the victim was born to the defendant and his ex-girlfriend. The defendant was busy with work, so the victim was mainly taken care of by his grandparents. The victim typically slept in the master bedroom with grandparents and a relative, while the accused slept in the living room.
Ignoring my daughter’s repeated begging to stop
On the day of the crime, the victim was eating breakfast at the dining table, and the defendant was sleeping near the dining table. When the defendant was alone with the victim, he took off his daughter’s pants and underwear and sexually assaulted her daughter with a vibrator.
Although the daughter repeatedly begged the father to stop, the defendant ignored it until the victim’s grandfather went out and returned home, the defendant stopped and hid in the toilet with a vibrator and lubricant.
When the victim’s grandfather came back home, he saw his granddaughter lying naked on the mattress with her lower body naked. The victim immediately screamed to her grandfather about the pain in her lower body. After the grandfather discovered the abuse, he confronted the defendant, but the defendant denied sexually assaulting his daughter.
After the victim’s grandmother learned about the incident, she asked the defendant to apologise to the victim and when he did, they decided not to call the police.
Defendant flees home after family calls police
However, the victim’s aunt believed that the police must be called. The defendant fled the house after knowing that his family called the police. Police arrested the accused two days later under a vehicle overpass at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5.
An assessment report from the School of Mental Health revealed that the victim had an intellectual disability and the defendant was of a clear mind at the time of the crime.
When the defendant pleaded in court, he admitted that he had made a mistake and hoped that the judge would give a lighter sentence while letting the defendant’s mother take care of her daughter.
