Korean zombie flick Train to Busan made such an impact on audiences worldwide that Warner Bros decided to make a remake of the film with the title The Last Train to New York.
However the project has since been postponed indefinitely. It was initially slated to premiere in cinemas on April 21st 2023.
The same date will now feature Stephen King’s classic novel adaptation Salem’s Lot.
The American version of the popular Korean flick has Timo Tjahjanto as director and Gary Dauberman of Annabelle Comes Home fame writing the script.
It will be produced by James Wan and the cast has not been announced so far. Wan is best known for his work in the horror genre as the co-creator of the Saw and Insidious franchises as well as being the man behind the The Conjuring Universe. In fact The Conjuring Universe is the second highest grossing horror franchise at over two billion dollars.
The 2016 film Train to Busan was a super hit with a story that revolves around businessman Seok-woo (played by Gong Yoo) taking his daughter Soo-an (Su-an Kim) to visit her mother.
What happens next is horrifying as a zombie outbreak occurs in Korea infecting the passengers on the train as they all struggle to survive while looking out for a stop that they hope is virus free and has no undead people.
Train to Busan’s sequel was released in 2020 titled Peninsula.
However the sequel did not fare as well as the original.
The Last Train to New York should it still proceed to filming has an advantage because there are two horror filmmakers behind it which means it will likely be a well executed production.
Tjahjanto is famous for his work on V/H/S/94, V/H/S 2, and May the Devil Take You while Dauberman is equally well know for writing the scripts in films like The Nun and Annabelle Comes Home among other films.
