A village on top of a mall in Indonesia

Cosmo Park, which sits on top of a shopping mall, is a busy place with people jogging, watering their plants or walking their dogs along neat asphalt roads.

“Neighbourhood kids pedal their bikes under frangipani trees and peach-coloured bougainvillea to the pool and tennis court. Apartments, comfortable and modern, sit side by side, with barbecues and toys stacked outside,” writes The Guardian newspaper.

The UK publication says the ‘village’ in the sky is quiet and orderly, it feels like any other suburban idyll, perched 10 storeys up on top of a shopping centre and car park far from the maddening crowd.

It is a real village, an urban bubble where normal life unfolds high above.

Built 10 years ago, it is unique and was ‘discovered’ when a drone flew over it and a photograph broadcasted it to the world.

In June, Twitter user @shahrirbahar1 posted a bird’s-eye view of the complex. The tweet has
26,8 k Retweets and 19,3 k likes.

The village sits on top of the Thamrin City mall, and has 78 units spread in five housing blocks and each house is built on 100 square meters.

The Twitter user posted his amazement at the scene: “Good morning Jakarta,” he wrote. “What type of person thinks about developing a housing complex on top of a building?”
Even in Indonesia, this has grabbed the attention of social media and the people in the largest city in the country.

The price is set between Rupiah 4-6 milliard for a unit but the price went down to Rupiah 2 milliard because of a lack of interest at the beginning.

Now it is attracting a lot of interest and is becoming a must for some investors considering the fact that rental is a mere Rupiah 25 million monthly.

While it just went viral because of the drone video posted on Twitter, it has existed since 2007. Most of the residents are expats who started to move in their new units in 2009.
